Welcome to Title 1 Reading at

North Smyrna Elementary School!!!

Title 1 is a federally funded program designed to help students achieve success in their classroom.  All students take part in a universal reading screening three times each year.  This tool is designed to identify specific problems in learning how to read.  Based on this screening, classroom grades, and teacher recommendations, children are grouped according to their area of need.  These 30-minute reading groups include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and enrichment.  Each week, students not meeting the benchmark are tested in order to check their progress.

We believe that your child’s educational progress is a partnership between home and school.  We welcome and appreciate any help or suggestions that you may have regarding your child.  We also hope to see families at our parent nights that we have planned for this year.

What can I do to promote my child’s reading at home?

1.                             Read to your child DAILY.  Read with intonation and different voices for the characters.  By sounding happy, sad, or angry, the words will come to life and the story will become more meaningful.

2.                           Learn about your child’s interests and suggest books, magazines, and articles that relate to those topics.

3.                           Let your child ask question and discuss the pictures, characters, and plot.  If your child feels comfortable asking questions and discussing books, this will carry over to the classroom.

4.                           Keep many different kinds of books and other reading materials at home.

5.                           Be a role model!  Let your child see you reading all kinds of printed material: cereal boxes, newspapers, novels, cartoons, word puzzles, recipes, menus, directions, and billboards…whatever you want!  Children will see that reading is relevant and a part of daily life.
